Production Analysis

I chose the song “Stand by Me” by Ben E King from 1961 to analyze. The song was written by King, Jerry Leiber, and Mike Stoller and was recorded by the Soul Stirrers with Johnnie Taylor singing lead.

The song starts up with a shaker and triangle as percussion and a bass (low string instrument) playing the thematic melody. As the voice starts singing there is a guitar that starts which is later added by a string orchestra also playing the thematic background. At 1:05 the chorus builds on harmony with “ooh” singing. All background instruments seem to be in a loop as the same thematic melody repeats and seem to sound a bit distant until the instrumental part when the volume of the string instruments increases with its own melody line. The song ends with a fade out simultaneously in all instruments and singing.
